HE WAS A 19TH CENTURY NAVAL OFFICER AND EXPLORER OF HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT. THE DATE "1838" IN APPEARS WAS WRITTEN IN A DIFFERENT HAND, AND SEEMS TO REFERENCE THE DATE OF THE BOOK'S YEAR OF PUBLICATION. OSBORN'S CAREER INCLUDED COMMANDING ROLES IN EXPEDITIONS TO THE FAR EAST, THE CARIBBEAN, AND THE CANADIAN NORTH IN SEARCH OF THE BRITISH EXPLORER FRANKLIN AND HIS MEN. HE ENDED HIS PROFESSIONAL LIFE AS A REAR ADMIRAL. A STANZA OF POETRY TRANSCRIBED ON THE FINAL BLANK LEAF MAY BE OF OSBORN'S HAND.
